Physical fitness prevents senescence. A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS Early Edition, February 20, 2004, 10.1073/pnas.0400266101) could prove for the first time in humans that that cardiovascular fitness results in increased cortical capillary supplies and neuronal plasticity. In functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) SJ Colcombe et al. could detect greater task-related activity in the prefrontal area and the parietal lobe as well the anterior cingulate cortex which is activating the attentional system in conflict situations and transduces the signals for adaptation of that system. So after all, Socrates was right when pointing to "Mens Sana In Corpore Sano" (A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body).
