Lancet paper beschuldigt Malaria Fond
Authors of a paper of Lancet paper(1) accuse the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM) to have approved grant proposals for artemisinin-class combination therapy.
This would be medical malpractice as in regions that the funds were aimed to a large scale resistance against such chemotherapy is present. Dr Attaran, the first author: "The WHO and the Global Fund have approved treatments for malaria to be sent to Africa that simply don't work." WHO said in response it always advocated newer, more effective treatment. Background: WHO's goal is to cut half Malaria deaths (currently around 1 Mio./year) by 2010. 25-33% of GFATM's 2.1 Bn US$ is dedicated to Roll Back Malaria. 1) Lancet 2004;363:237-240
